Organized in 1979, the Shanghai Ballet adheres to international traditions of classical ballet while recognizing the importance of creating new ballets based in Chinese folk traditions and stories. Over the past 20 years, many dancers of the Shanghai Ballet have won medals at international dance competitions. The company is also active in cultural exchanges, visiting Japan, Korea, France, Canada, the US, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
